Will find out what our history is!!

Our Coach

Edwina Hewison is the Coach of Dance Club. She's been dancing since she was 17 and quickly became Australasian Dance Champion with her partner (and husband) Bill. She also coaches freeskating.

Training Information

Dance Club meets once a week on Wednesday evening, from 6:00pm to 7:30pm. We train at Cockburn Ice Arena in Bibra Lake, which is one of Western Australia's two ice rinks.

A Dance Club session consists of two dance brackets, separated by a short stroking lesson. Each dance bracket consists of about 12 dances, alternating the easy with the more difficult. Music for each dance is played for about 1.5 minutes, which (unbelievable as it may seem!) is enough time to do several patterns of the dance.

The stroking lesson is a good time for beginners to work on balance and to learn new steps, while more experienced dancers develop their steps and edges. If there is a competition in the near future, or a couple is working towards a test, skaters may choose to do their own practice. This is fine as long as people remember their courtesy on the ice and avoid disrupting other people or having a collision!

Competitions

Dance Club organises two or three competitions during a year. These are either held during a Dance Club session (for a small number of entries) or on a weekend. The competitions are Dance Club Championships, the Hyland Trophy and the Solo Dance Competition. The Solo Competition is not always held; in this case a solo division is incoporated into the Dance Club Championships.

See the Competitions page for more details on Dance Club's competitions.

Members

There are three types of Dance Club membership:

General
Family
Competitive

This year we have about 25 general and family members in Dance Club, although not everyone attends the sessions each week. Typically, we have between 10 and 20 people on the ice in a session, which means there's plenty of room to move!

We have members of all ages and abilities. Our youngest member at the moment is 12 and our oldest well into their sixties. Some members haven't done any tests, a few hold Junior level and there's someone in virtually every level in between.
