Another web page that needs some serious
updating. No mention here of George Formby's Greatest Hits and that is a serious
omission. Having 614 Cd's (as at 03/10/09) there is so much to pick from and
really on any given day or in any given mood, my choices could change. I do
however, rate the following as exceptional creations that have stood the test of
time.
The
Wall
Pink Floyd

Released
: 1979. Lyrics : Roger Waters. Music : Roger Waters, Dave Gilmour.
A
well produced album showcasing Waters' talent as a lyricist. This theme
album follows the breakdown of a rock performer as he fails to deal with
his ever increasingly unreal existence. One of the best selling recordings
in history. Quite an amazing performance given that their Dark Side Of
The Moon album sold even more copies. Dark Side is nudging this top five
selection. |
Abbey
Road
The Beatles

Released
: 1969. Lyrics and Music : Lennon & McCartney, Harrison
My favourite album of
the Beatles. I find the second half of the album to very classical in structure.
Two great Harrison compositions in 'Something' and "Here Comes The Sun'.
It was about this time that the Beatles discovered the irrelevancy of royalty,
returning their MBE's to the Queen. I guess Sir Paul McCartney has had
a rethink on the issue. |
Bridge
Over Troubled Water
Simon &
Garfunkel

Released
: 1970. Lyrics and Music : Paul Simon.
Their
last original album. The recording quality is superb and the music and
lyrics are among Paul Simon's best. My favourite tracks are 'Only Living
Boy In New York', 'The Boxer', "Keep The Customer Satisfied' and of course,
the title track. |
The
Final Cut
Pink Floyd

Released
: 1983. Lyrics and Music : Roger Waters
The
last Floyd album before Waters disbanded the group. Strong anti-war theme
which was too much of a personal crusade for other band members. Lyrically
this is the strongest album I have heard. A very biting criticism of Thatcherism
and the Falklands war. |
