Scrabble Info & Hints

ScrabbleON  is the place to play Scrabble on the net. They conduct a chat room in IRC and you can access them by using an IRC programme such as Pirch or Mirc. Personally I use Pirch. Some Scrabble players on the net use a programme called Networdz which they easily reconfigure to play Scrabble. This is illegal, but it does happen. I would not be allowed to condone this. I just mention it in passing.

Once you are comfortable with it, then have a go at using one of the IRC programmes, it will enhance your enjoyment of being in the room. The people at ScrabbleON will be only too willing to help develop another Scrabble addict.


Here is a  brief outline of some strategies and tips that shape the way I play Scrabble. I have kept it brief because like me, you probably want to improve your competitiveness, not take part in the World Championship....

Set the programme to about 50% intelligence. Play it as much as you can. Improve the intelligence setting occasionally, just so you get used to having to think harder.

Avoid using long words unnecessarily. There is no point impressing your opponent if you are not scoring with it. Some short words score substantially more. For example - a word like 'HA' scored both ways on a treble letter score is worth 26 points.

Look for common letter groupings - they help you get the bingo's.. e.g..  ING ED ERS IER GHT IOUS.

Print out a list of the 2 and 3 letter words. Memorize them, use them. This is probably the most important thing you should do. It is cheating to use the list when playing against another player, but use it as a reference tool when playing against the computer.

If you can not use a treble word score that is available, maybe you can open up another treble word score so that you can follow your opponent's turn with something dazzling of your own?

Keep track of the use of at  least the key letters; Q, J, K, Z, X, the 4 'U's and the 2 blanks. There is nothing worse than watching your opponent put an ' x ' go down on a triple word score both ways, when you could have blocked it!
