UNDER 14'S - STIRLING LIONS VS SWAN IC (by the Sallery Family)
A glorious winter morning saw Captain Alex Sallery lead the mighty Stirling lions out on to Macedonia Park as the home team got the game off to a good start with early shots by Jason and Lee which resulted in good saves by the Swan I.C goalkeeper. Richard was brought down about 25yards form goal, which Alex had a crack at goal but the keeper saved comfortably. On 5 minutes a great through ball from Richard found Lee whose powerful run and strike found the back of the net. 1-0 Stirling. Swan broke free down the left wing but Alex was there to stop. A great cross from Eddie Pop on 12 minutes found Lee's boot as he guided it into the bottom corner. 2-0 Stirling. Then a great through ball from Mellad found Ashley whose silky maradona skills sees him slip his marker to go 1 on 1 with the keeper before calmly scoring in the bottom corner. 23mins 3-0 Stirling. An undisciplined free-kick given away by Jack 35 yards away from goal gave the Swan player the chance to hit it sweetly through Will's hands into the back of the net. 27 minutes 3-1.
Swans kick off the second half at 10:50 and immediately Stirling win the ball back through Mellad who feeds it to Richard who takes on and beats 3 players before a beckham style cross finds Andon's powerful run whose bullet header flys into the back of the net giving the keeper no chance. 4-1 Stirling. Rhys Wiggins comes on for his premier league debut and kicks it off with a great run & turn sending the defender the wrong way 20 yards out on a tight angle before producing a glorious shot which rockets into the top corner of the goal. 5-1 Stirling in the 37th minute. Great solid play at the back by the defence well led by Dillon and Jack with great distribution down the wings by Jason & Alex linking well with the Pop twins again finds James Mackie in the 50th minute who controls well before slipping a through ball which puts Lee through for his Hat Trick as he comfortably scores. 6-1 Stirling. A solid debut by Alex sees him forced off by an ankle injury as Jason comes and almost immediately pounces on a lose ball on the edge of the box to unleash a fierce shot which flys into the back of the net. 7-1 Stirling. Another break from defence saw Dillon power forward before slipping the ball to James Mackie who looked up to shoot first time but was blocked by the defender but smartly checked back then out to create space before unleashing a pile driver that flew into the net giving the keeper no chance. 8-1 Stirling in the 58th minute. Lee James was subbed in the 57 minute coming off to a roaring crowd after his all round contribution which included a hatrick. C.J produced a great cross from the right, which looked like the goalie had comfortably, but it popped out and Ashley was there to pick up the crumbs. 9-1 Stirling 59th minute. Stirling finished off the demoralized Swain IC team with another Rhys Wiggins goal in the final minute for his brace to secure a 10-1 result for Stirling who worked hard to try and forget about the midweek loss to ECU in the QTR final effectively bringing an end to their great cup run.

UNDER 14'S - SORRENTO VS STIRLING LIONS (by the Zacharia Family)
A solid all round team effort saw Stirling beat top of the table Sorrento 2-0 following a virtuoso performance from midfield general Mellad Sakhie who provided the catalyst for Stirlings win as the game further highlighted a strong showing from Lee James, who together with fellow State Team Player Dylan Filocamo, is finally starting to show his potential, as he scored both goals, the first a sweetly struck volley from the edge of the box, and his second from an indirect free kick which was passed to him by Jason which he blasted into the goal.
It took only 10 minutes for the Lions to get on the score sheet after a cross into the goalmouth by Richard was headed out by the defence to Lee whose volley found the back of the net. Stirling applied further pressure with Capt Ashley Zacharia combining well with Andon Andovski both menacing the Sorrento defence who worked hard to repel the Lions attacking thrusts. Sorrento countered but a great save by Will (the cat) Hofman kept the home team scoreless.
Stirling bounced back with Jason going on a solo run in the 24th minute with his shot on the run going narrowly wide and soon after Richards in swinging corner only needing a touch in the crowded goalmouth, but the ball avoided all the lunges from the Lions attackers. At the other end of the park it was Sorrento who went close with a dangerous shot just missing by inches in the 37th minute.
Striker Ashley Zacharia was replaced in the 40th minute by CJ and the speedy dynamic forward had an instant impact in the 44th minute when he went on a blistering solo run leaving two Sorrento defenders in his wake and then cutting the ball back to Mellad Sakhie whose shot from the edge of the box was skied over the bar when the goal was at his mercy.
The Lions came out of the break hungry for goals and it wasn't long before the lead was taken courtesy of a brilliant Jack Williams through ball for Eddie Pop to run onto and drill goal bound past the advancing keeper who saved well.
Carla Bennett sent Richard through, out wide with his inch perfect cross finding Andon who cleverly side footed the goal bound 65th minute which was again well saved. As the half wore on the Sorrento side were reduced to kicking the ball long in the hope that their forwards could provide some forward spark, but without effect as the Lions defence were whose back four of Jack Rankin, Dylan Filocamo, Jack Williams & Jason Stepanovski were all in a mean mood giving nothing away.
The icing on the cake for Stirling came from a well worked set piece with Jason's long throw in was neatly flicked into the goalmouth for Lions forwards but the Sorrento defender was quicker to react before dubious back pass decision resulted in the indirect free kick which was duly converted to finish off the match in the 85th minute.

UNDER 14'S - STIRLING LIONS VS COCKBURN CITY (by the Hofman Family)
Stirling took control of the midfield early as Mellad Sakhie dominated in the center on his own as Lee James had a quite first half apart from unleashing a couple of missile type shots wide of the target. The Pop twins were at their consistent best creating havoc for their opponents as they beat them one on one time & time again as we saw Richard brought down in the 7th Minute. The Lions took an early lead courtesy of the resulting well taken Jason Stepanovski free kick which was skillfully controlled on the chest of CJ whose first touch smartly went goal bound before he unleashed a fierce shot that gave the Cockburn State goalkeeper no chance.
Both teams were stringing great passages of play together with build ups from the back through midfield to the respective forwards whose tussles with the defence initially saw Cockburn equalize in the 25th minute after some sloppy passing by Jack Rankin was pounced upon.
Goal keeper Hofman was as solid as usual pulling off a number of saves before a lapse in concentration saw a speculative long range shot slip through for a soft goal as Cockburn took a surprised 2-1 lead in the 40th minute against the run of play. The Lions showed great character as they further intensified their game with free flowing passing. Jack Williams now on at right back replacing the tiring Carla Bennett sent through a great raining drill through ball to the hard running Richard Pop who expertly beat his full back before sending in a pin point Beckham type cross for the hard running Andon Andovski outpace his tall marker to clinically tap in at the near post to make it 2-2 as the crowd erupted in appreciation of what was a well rehearsed 'poetry in motion' training drill.
The determined Lions were searching for the elusive winner going close on a number of occasions now playing with only three at the back but were caught out with a classic counter attack as Jack Williams was caught on the wrong side of his forward who raced through to score in the 44th minute to give Cockburn a 3-2 lead.
Skillful playmaker James Mackie was creative just behind the front two showcasing his skills as he created a number of opportunities for others before going close himself with a classic one on one with the outstanding keeper who saved the day for Cockburn with his shoulder.
Another Lions 'poetry in motion' passage of play resulted in the rusty Ashley Zacharia missing the target from inside the 6 yard box as the final whistle sounded making the end result an exciting nail biting 3-2 win for Cockburn but the real winner on the day was football in general as both teams played the beautiful game the beautiful way.

PERTH JUNIORS CONQUER THE WORLD
The junior players of Perth S.C. can proudly hold their heads high following a successful tour of Italy and Spain on which they captured a swag of silverware. Perth's Under-14 squad went undefeated in fourteen outings, scoring 45 times and conceding just three, to lift both the Italy Cup and Copa-Catalunya. The Under-15's captured the Italy Cup and were awarded the Fair Play award at the Copa-Catalunya with eleven wins and a draw from their thirteen games on foreign shores.
The level of success achieved by both teams surprised Gary Marocchi, chairman of the tour committee. "We didn't think we had a chance of being victorious in any of the tournaments, so to come home with three trophies was beyond our expectations," he said. "The tour got off to a great start with some encouraging performances at the Italy Cup and that was backed up by a solid display at the Copa-Catalunya in Spain where the competition was a lot stronger."
Marocchi was particularly impressed by the players' unity and ability to quickly adapt to situations. "Both teams played as a cohesiveness unit and that aspect of their game got better with every match," he said. "The players had the flexibility to fill a number of roles and the changing the line-ups didn't disrupt their performances. Skill-wise, they matched up well against some tough opposition, but our greatest asset was a willingness to compete at all times with the Australian toughness shining through."
The first port of call was Rimini where the Under-14's cruised to victory in the Italy Cup. Goals from Vid Amidzic and Dylan Tombides opened their campaign with a 2-0 win over Richmond Hill (Canada). FB Denmark were dispatched 5-0 with Amidzic scoring twice and Jason Marsden, Joshua Wilkins and Joseph De Luca once each. Perth complete the initial phase by thrashing US Marquette (France) 7-0 against whom Tombides bagged a hat-trick, Alex Gismondi netted two and singles came from Milan Vulin and Amidzic.
Matthew Izzo got the only goal in a narrow defeat of AS Templeuve (France). Elhurst (USA) were humbled 5-0 through goals by Gismondi, Aaron Jeffery, Amidzic, Izzo and Tombides. This was followed by a 4-0 win oagainst US Pont Ste Maxence (France) where Amidzic, Ben Meredith, Tombides and Jeffery where the scorers. The final was a re-match with Richmond Hill which ended in a 5-0 route and goals from Amidzic (2), Wilkins, Jeffery and Vulin. "Their performance in the final was outstanding and a testament to the quality of football they played in Italy," commented Marocchi.
The Under-15's made a dream start to their tournament by thrashing Sasfeszek (Hungary) 8-1. Hat-tricks came the way of Liam Boland and Million Butshiire with Luke Bower grabbing the remainder. Two more goals by Bower enabled Perth to overturn a half-time deficit and claim victory by 2-1 against Elhurst (USA). The Blues finished top of Group A despite being held 1-1 by Enskede IK (Sweden) with Bower again on the scoresheet.
Bower continued his fine touch by netting the only goal in the 1-0 play-off defeat of Enskede IK. International Academy (USA) were accounted for 1-0 courtesy of a Robert Rixer strike, and Liam Boland got both goals in the 2-0 defeat of Szolnoki (Hungary). The final pitted Perth with Enskede IK for the third time in as many days with the Blues claiming the title 2-0 through a couple of quality finishes by Butshiire and Rixer. "We had a tough draw and our players discipline probably gave us the edge in a series of tight games," said Marocchi.
The Copa-Catalunya kicked-off three days later in Lloret de Mar, a coastal town 75 kilometres outside Barcelona. The Under-14's swept past Ars IK (Denmark) 5-0 in their first game, Tombides (2), Gismondi, Wilkins and Amidzic the scorers. A 1-1 draw with Akarpis IF (Sweden) came courtesy of Amidzic's strike on day two, while Amidzic (2), Gismondi (2) and own goal earned a 5-0 victory against FC Fondi (Italy). Tombides were the scorer in the 1-1 draw with Asteras Varis (Greece) which completed the group stage. Izzo and Amidzic were amongst the goals in a tough quarter-final showdown with Riverstown (Ireland).
A place in the series decider was booked by Amidzic whose late strike earned a 1-0 victory against Ars IK. Polisportiva Kasmene, who are aligned to Serie A club Messina, provided the opposition in the final which Perth won in a penlaty shoot-out. The Blues dominated the game and went ahead with eight minutes remaining through Meredith, only for the Italians to equalise shortly after. James Marocchi, Izzo, Tombides and Amidzic each converted from the spot but the hero of the hour was goalkeeper Tim Doyle who saved two penlaties.
The Under-15's opened the Copa-Catalunya by beating AS Beauvais (France) 1-0 with Bower the scorer. Rixer and Butshiire earned a 2-0 win over AC Passirano (Italy), while the 2-0 defeat of FC Koronida (Greece) came about through goal by Butshiire and Thomas Black. Perth came out flying against Kavlinge GIF (Sweden) in the quarter-finals with early goals by Boland and Butshiire giving them the upper hand, however, the Swedes fought back in the second half to take out the game 3-2.
The minor place-play qualifying game ended in a comfortable 3-0 win against LSC 1890 (Netherlands) against whom Bower netted twice and Boland once. Perth's under-15's secured fifth on the final standings by accounting for Bele-Barkarby (Sweden) 4-1 through goals by Bower (2), Boland and Butshiire. "The boys were awarded the Fair Play trophy for their sportmanship and attitudes on the park but were extremely disappointed with their quarter final loss, especially as Beauvais, who we beat in the first game, went on to win the tournament," explained Marocchi.
While Perth are yet to decided whether they defend the titles won in 2008, Marocchi says the club are making plans to head abroad again next year. "Perth have received an informal invitation for our Under-15's to compete in an invite only tournament in Rome which will include Italian teams such as Lazio, AS Roma and Bari amongst others," he said. "We'll attempt to obtain written confirmation of our invitation and then formally approach Perth and Football West for permission to participate."

FOOTBALL BRINGS TOGETHER REMOTE COMMUNITIES
Two small communities, at almost opposite ends of the State, have been brought together by a shared love of football. Steve and Mandy Hawkins, of Blackwood United in Balingup, have recently returned from their second visit to the remote aboriginal community of Kalumburu in the Kimberley. "We are true believers that club sport provides communities with an extended family, bringing people together in a safe and supportive environment and fortunately for us, football is one sport that caters for all age groups and is easily played by both boys and girls alike," commented Steve Hawkins.
The Hawkins' spent four days coaching children of all ages through the Australian Sports Commission funded Active After Schools Program. The week ended with a whole of school round robin five-a-side carnival day in which over one hundred children participated in four different age groups. Students were kitted out with donated football strips and balls kindly donated by Football West and some second hand boots that were generously donated by South West families.
Mandy Hawkins said the week-long event in Kalumburu was a runaway success. "The kids had an absolute ball and were totally exhausted by the end of the day," she commented. "The school provided a sausage sizzle lunch and we managed to rope in some school staff, local parents and workers for a goal kick-off to keep them all entertained at the lunch break. We hope that the experience will remain with them for a long time to come."
The Kalumburu Aboriginal Corporation are sending eight children, four boys and four girls between the ages of thirteen and sixteen, to play in a five-a-side carnival at the Blackwood United club. The Balingup-based club is also looking at hosting a football coaching clinic to coincide with the trip. "It is our hope that the kids from both regions who participate will take with them new friendships and an appreciation of just how far sport can take them in life," said Steve Hawkins.

UNDER 14'S - FLOREAT ATHENA VS STIRLING LIONS (by the Chibuta Family)
It was a depleted Stirling Lions team that saw stand in coach Giuseppe Arfuso line up take on a full strength Floreat due to State player Carla Bennett being away on NTC duties and regular goal keeper Will Hofman and playmaker James Mackie both away on school holidays as we saw Jimmy Billison & Liam Newman step up admirably from the U13s for their 2nd match of the day.
With striker Lee James in the unfamiliar role as goalkeeper for the day & pulling off a couple of good saves in the latter half of the game we saw his long penetrating goal kicks pressuring the Floreat defence from the start which set the trend for the day.
Stirling dominated throughout the game and missed chance after chance and could have been 5- nil up before finally finding the back of the net to give the Lions a 1 nil lead.
The Lions midfield dominated as did the defence who did not look like being beaten at any time until the last minute of the game when Floreat got a "Get out of Jail pass' courtesy of a dubious penalty awarded for an alleged handball by state player Dylan Filocamo which was converted and followed by the final whistle making the end result a 1-1 draw.

PERTH STARLETS HEAD TO EUROPE
Thirty-two of our brightest young talents will match skills with some of Europe's finest next month. The Under-14 and Under-15 squads of Perth S.C. head off to tour Italy and Spain on Friday on what former Australian international Gary Marocchi promises will be the experience of a lifetime. "This trip will be of enormous benefit to the players, both in terms of sporting, cultural and personal experiences," explained Marocchi. "Mixing and participating with players from all over the world will be a great learning experience for the boys."
Marocchi, chairman of the tour committee, feels strongly that participation in overseas tournaments is a great way of further developing Western Australia's emerging talents. "We as a club firmly believe we are contributing greatly to the games' future in WA," Marocchi commented. "Our youth players need to experience the different skills, training attitudes and playing styles of overseas teams. We feel that if we are able to promote some of the players to a higher standard of competition then our club will be remembered for its contribution to the code."
While serving to provide the Perth youngsters with the best possible development path, the tour will also help prepare several of the club's players for State honours. "We selected the Under 14 and 15 squads for the tour as these players will benefit most from the experience, and to prepare them for the national championships in early October," said Marocchi. "Perth has ten touring players in contention for the national championship squads and we believe the players selected for the national championships will be far better prepared for their first interstate competition after the tour."
A lot of hard work has gone into seeing the tour come to fruition for the Perth youngsters. "The trip is the culmination of six months of planning and six months fundraising," explained Marocchi. "A total of $280,000 has been raised to send 32 players from two teams, coaches, officials, physiotherapist and accompanying family members overseas. In total 56 people will be going on the tour. I'd like to say a special thank you to all the sponsors who have contributed in giving these players a trip of a lifetime."
The Perth juniors will take part in two tournaments while abroad, starting with the Italy Cup at Cesenatico that commences on 2nd July. The Under-14 side will take on FB Kobenhavn (Denmark), Elhurst (United States), Richmond Hill (Canada) and French teams AS Templeuve, US Marquette and US Pont S Maxence with the top two teams playing off for the silverware. The Under-15's are grouped alongside Sasfeszek (Hungary), Enskede IK (Sweden), and Elhurst (United States) with the top two progressing to the knock-out stage.
On 7th July the touring party head to Barcelona for the Copa Catalunya. The Under-14's get to pit skills with FC Fondi (Italy), Akarps IF (Sweden) and Asteras Varis (Greece) in the initial phase. The top two sides go through to the quarter-finals. The Under-15's meet AS Beauvais (France), AC Passirano (Italy) and FC Koronida (Greece) in the group phase. A spot in the play-off stage will go to the top two ranked teams.
The Perth Under-14 squad features Raffael Accurso, Mitchell Allen, Vid Amidzic, Marc De Francesch, Joseph De Luca, Tim Doyle, Allessandro Gismondi, Matthew Izzo, Aaron Jeffrey, James Marocchi, Jason Marsden, Ben Meredith, Massimo Salamone, Dylan Tombides, Milan Vulin and Joshua Wilkins. The team is coached by Bruno Marocchi, and managed by Tony Izzo.
The Perth Under-15 squad consists of Thomas Black, Liam Boland, Kaiden Boksich, Denis Botvenev, Luke Bower, Million Butshiire, Matthew Hill, Jayden Lombardi, Luka Njegich, Joshua Pereira, Curtis Prior, Joseph Pullella, Robert Rixer, Michael Salsano, Corey Woods and Nathan Woods. Eric Marocchi is coach of the side and Dusan Njegich the team manager.

UNDER 14'S - STIRLING LIONS VS SORRENTO (by the Stepanvski Family)
On a very wet and windy Saturday morning, Stirling's Premier League team traveled to Sorrento for the third round of the under 14 Harvey Fresh Junior Cup. The Stirling team expectations were high following good results in the league the previous few weeks.
Captain for the day Jason, won the toss and elected to kick with the assistance of a very strong wind. Within seconds from the kickoff Stirling was 1-0 up with Richard Pop finding space in the box and placing his shot wide of the Sorrento keeper. The goal was a great boost for the Stirling team's confidence who dominated the early play. The Sorrento defence was under so much pressure that they found it difficult to get out of their own half. Despite all this pressure and attempts on goal, Stirling was unable to add to their early strike. Sorrento's few attempts on goal in the first half were well wide and didn't trouble the Stirling goal.
The second half started with Sorrento now kicking with the aid of the wind. The strong wind was of no assistance to Sorrento whose efforts on goal were long range speculative shots that did not trouble Will, the Stirling keeper. Stirling played the better brand of football by passing the ball around and keeping the ball on the ground. Their efforts were again rewarded in the 2nd half when an Eddie Pop cross from the left was intercepted by the Sorrento defender and into the arms of his keeper. The Sorrento keeper was adjudged by the referee to have picked up the back pass and this resulted in an indirect free kick for Stirling from only 5 metres out. From the resulting free kick, Lee put the ball into the back of the net to give Stirling a deserved 2-0 lead. The Stirling team was playing great team football and good chances fell to Andon and CJ with the side netting being hit on a number of occasions.
A long through ball down the middle by Sorrento caught the Stirling defence out of position with the Sorrento forward sliding the ball into goal to make the score 2-1. Sorrento from this moment applied tremendous pressure but great work by the Stirling defence and a solid effort in midfield by Mellad, thwarted any clear chances.
As the half wore on, Stirling created a number of chances but these were not able to be converted in the difficult windy conditions. As the referee blew the whistle to end the game, Stirling was in the quarter finals of the cup. The 2-1 win against top of the table opposition was just reward for a great effort by the whole team.

RED CARD FOR ‘UGLY PARENTS’
While some junior players this winter may catch the flu, some spectators are likely to be struck down by a much more dangerous affliction - ‘ugly parents’ syndrome! The Australian Sports Commission reminds parents and spectators alike that poor behaviour, often coined ‘ugly parents’ syndrome, and the abuse of match officials such as umpires and referees is not acceptable. The vast majority of parents and spectators are supportive and provide positive encouragement to all participants but it only takes one person to make children’s sport an unpleasant experience for everyone - children, officials, coaches, parents and other spectators.
The Australian Government, through the ASC, and state governments are working hard to help sports eradicate poor spectator and player behaviour from their games and provide sporting experiences for young Australians that are safe, fun and rewarding. The ASC, state governments and sports themselves have a number of excellent programs and initiatives in the community to help sports manage the issue of poor spectator behaviour. This sort of behaviour and negative experience is often cited as one of the reasons children drop out of sport.
Everyone has a role in acting as good role models for children playing sport but the role of parents is particularly crucial. Children model their behaviour on that of their parents. Amongst the initiatives already making a difference to spectator behaviour at community level are junior referees wearing brightly coloured vests to make it clear they are learning how to officiate, and nominated officials issuing yellow and red cards to spectators not behaving appropriately.

UNDER 14'S - STIRLING LIONS VS SORRENTO (by the Kim Family)
It was a windy winters day for a great game of football in the Football West Under 14's First Division. Stirling started off cautiously, causing their forwards to be caught offside a couple of times, but maintained a relentless attacked on the Sorrento defence and goalkeeper. During a goalmouth scramble, the ball went over the line in the Sorrento's goal and was given by the referee, but was controversially disallowed after protest from the Sorrento linesmen claiming the ball never went over the line, resulting in a goal kick much to the dismay of the Stirling players. Never the less Stirling continued to push forward. A hard tackle placed on Kaan resulted in his shin pads cracking and an injury to his shin which saw him come off the ground earning a free kick and the Sorrento player receiving a yellow card. From the ensuing free kick, Irwin sent a great ball behind the Sorrento defence, Rhys pounced on it making a good pass to Nathan who scored.
Stirling dominated play in the second half. A short while later Rhys earned a free kick after being fouled by the Sorrento defence from a great through-ball. Kaan took advantage of this chance after returning to the field finding the back of the net with a low hard kick. Shortly after, Kaan found himself one on one with the keeper and slotted it home scoring once more. Hayden, Rhys, Callum, James and Bobi had their chances but just missed out on scoring. As hard as Sorrento tried, they just couldn't penetrate through the Stirling midfield and defence. At the end of the match, Stirling came away with three points. (3 - 0)

UNDER 14'S - STIRLING LIONS VS ECU JOONDALUP (by the Mackie Family)
It was a sunny morning at the home ground of the mighty Stirling Lions who were rearing to go for their 1st league win of the season led by Captain James Mackie against the unbeaten ECU Joondalup. With a last minutes injury to Fabio and with key defender Jack Rankin away in Sydney with the Australian jnr cricket team Jimmy Billison was stepped up from the U13s at short notice for his 2nd game of the day to make his U14 Premier debut. Both teams started off running hard and pressuring each other while ECU seemed to be getting the better of Stirling with several great opportunities not being finished either going just wide or blasted over the bar due to the extreme pressure being applied by the determined stirling defence being led by State player Dylan Filocamo. Stirling's defence was working hard continuously putting an end to many tricky Joondalup attacks through the strong, hardworking partnership of Dylan & Jimmy who was composed in Central defence with Jason & State player Carla Bennett tucking in and being well positioned picking up the scraps. Will as usual was hard working and always well positioned applying pressure to any forwards coming in on his goal. At half time neither team had much to show for all their hard work except a few bumps & bruises following the tenacious tackling as the whistle sounded for a well deserved half time rest.
Both teams came out of the change rooms eager to finish off what was started in the first half. Early on the central midfield battle was won with Lee & Mellad holding the middle well & pushing forward trying to find a way through the tight Joondalup defence. Joondalup were again creating chances but couldn't get anything past Will 'The Cat' Hofman who was almost unbeatable in goal keeping out several Joondalup shots and forcing near misses that would have otherwise hit the back of the net. Stirling pushed forward with a set piece playing the ball to Andon who shielded the ball while being pressured by the Joondalup defence before turning his defender and passing the ball out wide to Richard whose pin point cross was missed by several ECU players before Eddie ghosted in at the back post to rifle in a tight angled shot in between the post & the Joondalup keeper to make it 1-0 to Stirling. Now the crunching tackles started as Joondalup suddenly awoke & were creating chances again but Stirling were not intimidated and showed commitment & discipline to win the ball back creating their own chances as the ball broke free to State player Lee James, who drifted in and out of the game, near the edge of the 18 yard box who controlled it nicely & let loose with a left foot volley that was going in but was was well saved by a last minute desperate dive from more excellent Joondalup goalkeeping. The pressure upfront was maintained with CJ, James & Andon prowling working tirelessly forcing ECU errors which the midfield picked up as they were holding their positions well. Mellad and Jack were now controlling the center keeping Joondalup at bay but ECU showed spirit and continued to apply their own pressure as we saw the ball spill free to an ECU midfielder who played it out wide as the winger did a quick 1-2 & crossed the ball which Mellad, now in defence replacing the exhausted Jimmy, tried desperately to clear but was out jumped by the Joondalup forward who headed in at the back post, 1-1. Stirling showed great character with discipline & commitment quickly countering with some of their own great teamwork as the defence kept the ball on the ground finding the midfield with great short passes which were continually played out wide in set plays to find the Pop twins who were worked tirelessly for the full 60 minutes with skill and tenacity as wing backs. From a Lions throw in near the 18 yard box another set piece saw the throw run onto by James to picked out Eddie Pop who cut in and fired in a right foot shot to the bottom corner only for the Joondalup keeper to pull off an excellent save palming the ball away but this was pounced upon by the prowling Lions as CJ applied pressure as the ball fell free which was quickly followed up with a desperate slide from Richard Pop who bravely got a touch on the ball to see it roll in to the bottom corner of the goal to give Stirling a well deserved 2-1 lead with 5 minutes to go. The intensity disappeared from the game as the final whistle sounded and the crowd erupted and applauded both teams for show casing their great skills, ability and sportsmanship by both sides coaching staff as the whole Stirling bench ran on to the pitch celebrating & shaking hands after their first league win of the season as the tide has clearly turned following last Saturdays 6-1 cup win against Armadale.
Stirling Lions went into their First Division match against Forrestfield United as the under-dogs. Stirling had something to show and Forrestfield were knocked off their feet by the guts and determination of the whole team. Defence kept Forrestfield under control right from the first whistle, attacking hard, strong and fearlessly. At the 20min mark the game really stepped up when Kaan in midfield put a well placed thru ball to James who between Reece and James put enough pressure on the defence and the goal keeper who came off his line for Reece to slip the ball past them all and into the net. Much to the excitement of all the supporters and shock to Forrestfield. In the last 5min of the first half Forrestfield put a lot of pressure on the defence having several shots at goals unable to score. The second half had Stirling defence working overtime, keeping Forrestfield unable to set up any effective shots or game play. Stirling continued to attack with Reece having a good try on goal with his left foot just missing which then led to Stirling being recharged giving Hayden a fast run down the wing crossing over to Reece who had defenders all around him, the ball spilling to the ground and James reacting sharply shooting at close range, scoring, but then to be called off-side.Stirling had Forrestfield rattled, keeping the pressure on every pass by Forrestfield, from the forwards right thru to the defence. With just 30 seconds to go some how Forrestfield managed to have several shots on goals one even rebounding of the post, and one getting in to level the score at 1-1. A devistated Stirling Lions went back to the centre hoping enough time remained to get just one more shot on goals, but the referee blew the whistle, game over. An extremely deflated team left the field, having put in all the hard work only to have it taken from them in the dying seconds. The boys were all grateful to our experienced new goal-keeper and welcomed him into the team.

UNDER 14'S - STIRLING LIONS VS PERTH (by the Andovski Family)
On a beautiful sunny day at Macedonia Park Stirling were looking to their rejuvenated team to get another win following the 6-1 cup win on Saturday against Armadale.
The match started with the expected intensity from both sides as Perth got the first shot on target but Will saved it. Stirling replied in the 3rd minute after some good passing Richards through ball to Andon saw him get fouled which saw Lee take the free kick which the goalkeeper saved but the rebound hit a Perth player in the hand. The resulting penalty saw Lee calmly slot it in the net making it 1-0 to Stirling. After a couple of mins it become 1-1 following a long strike from perth that deflected in from the crossbar. Stirling then upped their game tempo and saw Richard get the ball near the perth goal and shoot it but the keeper saved it and Andon was on hand to tap it in 2-1 stirling. Minutes later there was good buildup play from the midfield which saw Andon volley a shot that went just wide. Perth got possession in our 16 yard box and got fouled and they got a penalty they put in making it 2-2. In the second half there were shots by Richard and Andon but they went wide. Stirling appeared to run out of steam and were under pressure by perth in the last 10 minutes as perth scored 2 more goals 1 from a header and 1 from corner winning 4-2.
In the Stirling Lions vs Wanneroo Division One match, the Stirling Lions had an excellent start to the game with Captain Hayden Yates winning the toss (tails) and selecting the south (best) end of the ground.
Reece Wiggins was ready and kicked the first goal straight off the mark before Wanneroo could even blink!
This excellent team effort setting things up for Stirling to continue dominating the first half of the game with good saves, headers and strong footwork to keep Wanneroo on the run. There were quite a few tries, with tense moments and some goal kicks not quite making it, however Stirling continued to follow-up with retries that resulted in another three strong goals from two players for the first half of the game.
Stirling dominated with every opportunity and players gelled well as a team, looking for each other and strategically setting up passes while moving at a fast pace down the field towards the goal victories!
Half-time gave Coach Rocky the opportunity to review the game strategy with the team, which also resulted in some great sportsmanship with key players opting for a rest to give the eager subs the opportunity to participate in a big win opportunity! It was a slow start to the second half with nearly 20 minutes of strong defence from both sides with a lot of argy bargy and no goal scored. Trainer Tony’s support was strong from the sideline with a ‘UP YA’ comment having parents laughing along with their encouragement to all the Stirling players.
Then out of the blue came Joseph CoehnÂ’s first goal for the season which also resulted in a cartwheel to finish off his excitement! This key goal in the second half was exactly what Stirling needed as Reece followed up with another quick goal afterwards to finish off the game 7-0.

UNDER 14'S - INGLEWOOD UNITED VS STIRLING LIONS (by the Sakhie Family)
The game started off at a frantic pace with both teams midfields vying for control as stirling looked to be getting on top early stringing a number of one & two touch passes together but the stirling 'twin towers' of Rankin & Filocamo got caught on the break by the fast Inglewood forwards who where running riot eventually scoring in the 9th minute as they took an early 1-0 lead.
Jason Stepanovski was creating numerous chances with his pin point crosses from the left but somehow no one managed to get on the end of them.
Chisengele Chibuta JNR better known as 'CJ' stepped up from the div 1 team to score in the 26th minute on his debut after a threw ball from midfield general & Capt Mellad Sakhie saw CJ execute a classy finish rounding the keeper in a classic one on one to slot home the ball to make it 1-1 at half time. Another great run through the middle by CJ was squandered as he overran the ball much to the relief of the Inglewood defence.
Stirling were starting to dominate until right back Fabio Castro got caught in possession in the 39th minute by the pacey Inglewood forwards who were chasing hard and managed to rob the full back and race through to score making it 2-1.
A communication breakdown in the 52th minute between keeper Will Hofman & centrehalf Dylan Filocamo allowed the Inglewood forward to race through unchallenged to score a soft goal in the 52 minute to secure the game for Inglewood with the final score being 3-1.
In the First Division, the Lions met Fremantle on a wet Winters day and a last minute withdrawal of Tim Barber due to influenza saw coach Scully making last minute adjustments to his backline and giving the boys an inspirational team talk before the game. From the first kick off the Stirling team was caught off guard as a quick goal was scored by Freo from a long range kick that sailed over the heads of the defenders and keeper. This motivated the Stirling team to re-group and put some pressure on the Freo defenders which resulted in a equaliser scored by James Corrigan through a well timed pass by Nathan Scully from mid-field. The score at half time was 1 - 1. The second half saw the Stirling defence under enormous pressure but they repelled all attacking moves with some great defensive work from Alex, Hayden, Irwin and Adam. Goal keeper Daniel also played a key role in pulling off some great saves. The game continued with the ball going back and forth with both teams unable to convert and the Stirling defence continuing to work hard to prevent the Freo forwards from scoring. The game ended in a 1 -1 draw. A good result for the Stirling boys against a team that was in the top three. Special thanks to the many parents that turned up on this wet cold day to support the boys. A very big Thank You to Debbie Scully for all her efforts in managing the team and to coach Scully for developing a close knit team of boys combining to play well with passion and with heart.

UNDER 14'S - STIRLING LIONS VS FLOREAT ATHENA (by the Willams Family)
Stirling's starting eleven welcomed two new players this week being the Pop twins who, along with CJ on the bench, changed the dynamics of the squad. All three newcomers were sourced from other Stirling teams as this team continued to look for that elusive win.
For the first fifteen minutes both teams were evenly matched and most of the action was in mid-field. One threatening shot from the opposition was confidently taken in the hands of 'keeper Will Hofman after which Stirling began to apply more pressure on the strong, and notably tall, Floreat defence. Fabio Castro substituted for captain Jack Williams in central mid-field in the middle of this half whilst Eddie and Richard Pop made strong runs up the left and right wings respectively. Seventeen minutes into the game and a well placed through ball from James Mackie found Richard Pop running onto the ball with only the Floreat keeper to beat. He did this by confidently side stepping to the right and putting the ball quietly into the net. Stirling lifted their game immediately after kick off with Richard giving Andon Andovski the ball this time and a good shot at goal gave Floreat even more to think about. Surprisingly, a Floreat free kick taken on the half-way line, sailed high through the air directly into the outstretched arms of Will Hofman. Soon after, Carla Bennett worked the ball up the right wing and a renewed attack on the Floreat defence produced a corner. Whilst this was the first corner he had taken for this team, Eddie Pop found Fabio's head and the score became 2 - 0. A double Stirling substitution saw both strikers Mackie and Andovski replaced by CJ and Lee James, the latter having had a short rest when Mellad Sakhie took to the pitch. Although two further attacks on the Floreat goal failed to deliver, the strong Stirling defence helped maintain our lead as the only attempts on our goal seemed to stem from Floreat free kicks.
The second half was less entertaining and somewhat erratic with seventeen free kicks awarded for mostly minor offences with only one for handball and one for off-side. With six free kicks in the first seven minutes there was no 'flow' to the game and Stirling found it difficult to get back into their stride. Another long, high Floreat free kick was punched out of the goal mouth by Will and it became clear Floreat wanted to be back in this game. Floreat had five consecutive 'frees' between the seventh and twelfth minutes and the net was eventually found by some hungry strikers when the ball rebounded off our goalie's hands. Soon after kick off Mellad's pass to CJ gave him a good run but unfortunately he was closed down by the Floreat defence, giving a corner ball. A succession of free kicks, now in Stirling's favour, failed to increase our score though a good corner taken by Jason Stepanovski found Dylan Filocamo's head and came close. Floreat retaliated by producing a high ball over the keeper's head to level the score in the twenty seventh minute. Another powerful Stirling free kick taken by Lee James bounced off the Floreat goalie and Andon's follow up shot nearly gave us three points but the score remained 2 - 2. So near yet so far!
Stirling's Under 14's First Division side showed Inglewood how to play soccer on Sunday with a demonstration of outstanding skill and discipline. Inglewood had the first kick off, but a quick turnover by Stirling saw an early shot at goals with in the first 20 seconds. "Game On". Great defensive work by our back line, Adam Easter Easter, Erwin, Alex Sallery and Tim Barber ensured Inglewood rarely got close to their gaols. A few long shots for goal by Inglewood were easily covered by our goalie, Daniel. Outstanding teamwork in the mid field saw the ball continuously passed up to Stirling's strikers with only one or two passes needed. Inglewood's goalie had his work cut out with the interception of a number of long shots at goal from Stirling. Stirling's first threatening shot at goal came via a great pass from James sending the ball over the top of the opposition and placing it in front of Rhys Wiggins the Inglewood goalie came out to intercept the ball but Rhys Wiggins 's superior speed beat him to it. Unfortunately Rhys Wiggins 's kick just passed over the top of the goals. Ownership confusion brought on by a lack of communication between our goalie and defence players saw Inglewood taking full advantage of a loose ball. The unchallenged ball was quickly booted in to score an easy 1st goal of the game by Inglewood.
Relentlessly during the 1st half Stirling's midfield were able to deliver the ball to the forwards, with a minimum of passes but we were just unable to convert. Inglewood had some great defence players that where able to catch up with our forwards and clear the ball close to the goals time after time. Stirling's first and equalising goal came just minutes before half time with a brilliant header from Rhys Wiggins off a well-placed kick from a corner. The start of the second half saw the Lions back out on the field first, hungry for a win. One of many great plays came from a sniper Bullet like kick from Capt Nathan Scully to James Corrigan who broke right and left then slammed the ball into the nets for Stirling's second goal. Stirling seemed to lose momentum in the final quarter which permitted Inglewood to finally penetrate our defences allowing decent shots at goals. This resulted in a goal by Inglewood that Stirling was just not able to clear. With the score level at two all, Inglewood started playing like a team possessed, determined to get another goal. Stirling took up the challenge and soon answered the call with many great plays, one of which culminated in Stirling's 3rd goal via a great pass from Michael Koios to Rhys Wiggins who dribbled it up the field and slammed it past the Inglewood goalie. Inglewood had the opportunity to reply soon after, via free kick close to their goals but the ball came off the side of the players boot and missed the goals. In the closing seconds Stirling had two more shots at goals. Firstly a pass from Alex Sallery to Rhys Wiggins, but the ball was too far in front and was intercepted by the goalie and secondly when Irwin booted the ball from the back line up to James Corrigan who shot it towards the goals, but the Inglewood goalie just managed to get a fingertip to it and deflect it.

UNDER 14'S - COCKBURN CITY VS STIRLING LIONS (by the Castro Family)
Stirling started brightly having the first chance of the match in the 3rd minute following a quick throw from wing back Jason Stepanovski which found James Mackie whose well timed run saw him smartly beat the full back before crossing the ball resulting in a goal mouth scramble. Three Stirling players attempted to drive the ball into the goal as defenders blocked then cleared the ball long for cockburn to score on the counter attack twice in the first 10 minutes and again in the 20th as the referee blew for half time at the 21 minute mark much to the surprise of Stirlings 'twin towers' Dylan Filocamo & Jack Rankin and all present as cockburn took a 3-0 lead.
Stirling came out determined to make amends as they exerted pressure on cockburn which was eventually rewarded as Capt Fabio Castro soared high to head home from the first of several corners to make it 3-1. Lady luck was not smiling on forwards Andon Andovski and James Mackie who both had shots on goal saved. Stirlings midfield had numerous other chances to win the game from free kicks and shots in general play but failed to hit the target until the Lions midfield increased their work rate against the fast & skillful cockburn outfit resulting in Mellad Sakhie skillfully outmaneuvering his opponent before unleashing a pile driver which despite being deflected still sailed into the net to make it 3-2. Knowing the game had been shortened a desperate Stirling threw caution to the wind playing three at the back as they pushed forward for the equalizer which almost paid off as Kaan Ozkara's great shot on the run cannoned back off the post. The desperate Lions defence were caught out by another quick counter attack in the 45th minute just before the ref blew the final whistle after just 45 minutes of play (15 minutes short of normal) to give Cockburn a 4-2 win. The following U15 match kicked off 10 minutes early which further frustrated the Lions who hope there next match which is at home at MACEDONIA PARK next week against Floreat with a 10.10am KO will be for a full 60 minutes of play so they can chalk up their first win after all their hard work which continues to see them dominating their opposition but failing to capitalise on all the opportunities created.
The First Division game against Rockingham City started at 10.30 sharp. Within 5 minutes, Stirling had the ball in the attacking box. The ball was constantly in the centre of the field. Stirling attacked again but the Rockingham goalie was too good. In the sixth minute, Rockingham counter attacked Stirling and got a goal. Stirling got back up and tried even harder but couldn't get the ball in the back of the net. Later on in the half, Rockingham built up their strength again and took the ball for a run and put it in the back of the net. Stirling was angry but weren't willing to give up. Stirling attacked from the kickoff. With half time approaching, Stirling was still goalless until James ran the field and got Stirling their first goal. Rockingham quickly reacted and got another goal just before half time. Stirling started the second half with an excellent run from CJ up the field into the box but was unfortunately tackled just before the shot, which got passed up the field and was hammered into the net. Stirling didn't like losing so they attacked and attacked until the ball finally got back into the net from one of James' awesome shots, but Stirling were still down by 2. The game was without any goals for a while until Rockingham got a lucky shot past Danijel. Stirling weren't happy with this so they went up again but lost it close to the 18 yard box. They had all the possession but couldn't get goals. Rhys got a bit angry so he pounded the ball and got it into the net at last. Stirling was down but kept trying. Rockingham didn't like the idea of a close game so they pounded 3 goals after another instantly to win them the game 8-3. Stirling still ended with their heads up, despite the loss.

UNDER 14'S - STIRLING LIONS VS SORRENTO (by Mal Mackie)
It was a case of DaJaVu for Stirling as they again dominated play but failed to apply the finishing touch as Sorrento grafted to the end scoring a soft goal in the last minutes of the game to take the 3 points with a 1-0 win. The Lions keeper Will Hofman had a quite game as the Lions defence lead by captain Dylan Filocamo dominated the Sorrento forwards who apart from a couple of soft chances were outplayed all over the park as we saw the classy Carla Bennett reading the game well with some well timed interceptions and good distribution of the ball. Sorrento were well beaten by the fast anticipation of Jack Rankin who was rock solid as usual and any half chances were quickly tidied up by the steady left boot of Jason Stepanovski. An early accidental elbow to the head, which required stitches, brought an end to the brave & enterprising Jack Williams game who was disappointed leaving the ground bleeding as he had been causing Sorrento all sorts of problems out wide on the right. Lee James looked as strong as usual bursting forward through the midfield but unable to apply the finishing touch with the heavy & out of shape Mitre ball. Hayden Yates worked tirelessly us usual but both his & Kaan Ozkara's crosses, when he came on to replace Jack, were not of the usual high standard as the forwards were staved of opportunities to score in the first half. The forwards continued to work hard as did the whole team eventually creating a number of scoring opportunities which saw Andon Andovski miss kick & sky a simple tap in high over the bar from 6 yards out much to the shock & horror of the crowd. James Mackie's attempted chip failed to clear the keeper as did another shot that skimmed just wide which generally summed up the day in that the wrong options were either taken and/or poor passing / ball control resulted in dire consequences. Mellad Sakhie & Fabio Castro rotated through the middle of midfield as the fresh legs including Tim Barber saw the coach looking for some midfield ascendancy and drive forward which was not forthcoming.
Overall a lot of positives came out of the game in that stirlings passing game complimented with their work rate & well timed ball to the playing breaking forward sees them dominating their opposition and once the opportunities created start hitting the back of the net opposition teams will suffer some big losses.
On a sunny Sunday morning. The Stirling lions under 14 division 1 played Canning city with starting the match with great pride. The match started with Stirling getting a chance to have a shot at goal but was unlucky and missed. Then the ball was just played around not any goals being scored. Then 20 minutes into the first half out of nowhere a goal by the canning city. Then with in 2 minutes of half time a free kick was awarded to Canning city, it was taken quickly with a result of a goal. In the first half the goalkeeper Danijel Pavic had some great saves. And with the fist half coming to an end score as 2 - 0 to Canning City.

UNDER 14'S - SWAN IC VS STIRLING LIONS (by Mal Mackie)
Stirling Lions Under 14's Premier League team traveled out to the Swan Italian Club for this week's clash. The Lions started enterprisingly enough but a Swan free kick on 5 minutes found a player unmarked at the back post and his head put the home side one-nil up. Stirling immediately pressed the attack forcing a number of good saves from the Swan IC 'keeper, but were unable to capitalise on the scoreboard. The last ten minutes of the first half belonged to 'keeper Will Hoffman. Time and again Will pulled off some incredible saves, allowing Stirling to go to half time one goal down.
The second half saw the rain start to fall and Stirling play some really attacking football, but even though they had more possession, it was Swan who again scored a headed goal in similar fashion to the first, with the ball coming in from the right to an unmarked player at the back post. The introduction of Carla Bennett 10 minutes in to the second half saw the right side of the park open up as an attacking option and it was only four minutes later that Lee James brought the score back to 2-1. With the rain getting heavier Stirling applied plenty of pressure with the solid defence setting up plenty of opportunities as well as rebuffing a determined Swan forward setup. Even though the second half was played mainly in the Swan half, Stirling were unable to convert the pressure into goals and finished the day with no points for all their efforts with a final score line of 2-1
The First Division Stirling Lions met Balcatta on the same day, and the match started off with Balcatta winning the ball most in the first half but when stirling got the ball into Balcattas half of the pitch ,James Corrigan did a series of ronaldo type step overs which confused the keeper before slotting the ball home for an easy goal. The score was 1-0 to stirling . About 20 minutes later the Balcatta midfield did a great through ball which their striker got in the clear giving the defenders no chance of stopping him as they equalised. The score at half time was 1-1.
In the second half Stirling tried do in some quick one twos in triangles in Balcattas half, but no ball seemed to manage to get through their tough defenders. 10 minutes later Balcatta finally managed to score a goal past the stirling keeper who was pulling off outstanding saves but this long range shot from outside the 18 yard box gave the keeper no chance. Stirling battled hard keeping their heads up and trying to equalise but the Balcatta midfield dominated in the latter stages of the game which saw Balcatta then score another goal about 5 minutes later. The score ended up Balcatta 3-1 Stirling lions.

UNIONS PUTS HANDS IN POCKETS FOR JUNIORS
As the countdown to this year’s Federal election rolls on the union movement have announced their sponsorship of sixteen junior teams as part of its publicity assault on the WorkChoices legislation. UnionsWA has arranged $8800 in sponsorship from a range of unions to provide new playing kits for the Tuart Hill juniors, whose shirts will carry the slogan “Your Rights at Work” and union logos. Tuart Hill play in the marginal seat of Stirling, held by Liberal incumbent Michael Keenan.
UnionsWA secretary Dave Robinson denied it was inappropriate to use children as young as eight in the campaign, claiming that unions’ sponsorship was no different to that offered by companies. “We sponsored juniors because we think Howard’s workplace laws will adversely impact on parents’ time with their kids in the future and it’s very much about kids and their future so we saw this as a very important way to get our message across,” he said. “We just think there is a natural affinity there.”
Tuart Hill club registrar Diane Eldridge said it was purely a commercial decision and the club had no intention of pushing the union message. “We haven’t had new shorts for years and years,” Eldridge said. “The shirts will be made of nice material, it is nice new modern design and it’s in our colours. Nobody in the 42 years of the club has ever offered anything like this … This is about the kids and it means we can spend more money on equipment for the club.”

UNDER 14'S - STIRLING LIONS VS SUBIACO CITY (by Mal Mackie)
On a very warm autumn morning, Stirling started the game quite tentatively, but after a few minutes quickly got into their stride and started to dominate possession. An early free kick from Lee tested the Subiaco goalkeeper who responded with a good save.
Stirling were really pressing strongly and nearly all of the play was taking place in Subiaco's half, but even with all the possession there were few clear cut chances as the Subiaco defence was working overtime to deny Stirling time and space. As the half wore on the team started to move the ball around really well, and one passage of play saw the ball start with Carla in the right back position and then move across the pitch with a series of passes to the opposite full back Jason, who then linked play up with the midfield to allow them to set up a great shooting opportunity for Lee whose shot whistled over the bar. Some great stuff and the move showed the value of keeping possession and being patient.
A sign of Stirling's dominance in this period is that Subiaco's first corner didn't come until the 22nd minute. The few times Subiaco did look threatening the danger was quickly dealt with by the excellent defending of Dylan and Jack and they were ably assisted by the 2 fullbacks Carla and Jason. This meant that Will was left to deal with very little in goal. The midfield was also working very hard to deny Subiaco any time on the ball, and they were also helping to drive the play forward by spreading the ball wide to the flanks. A number of great crosses were supplied by Hayden and Jack from the wide positions, but they just eluded Andon and James. At half time the score was 0-0 and all the play was with Stirling. The game quickly settled into the pattern of the first half with Stirling getting to the ball ahead of their opponents and pushing them back deep into their half. Almost straight after the break some good work from Mellad led to a flashing drive from Jason just over the bar.
As the half wore on Mellad and Fabio continued to probe for the openings and with Kaan and Hayden working hard down the flanks more chances were being created, but they just couldn't get converted, due to a mixture of bad luck and great defending from Subiaco, The defence, which now included Tim, couldn't relax for a moment though as Subiaco did have a few runs through the centre and from one of these breakaways Will had to rush out of his goal and unfortunately collected a yellow card as he was adjudged to have fouled the Subiaco player. After that scare though traffic became even more 1 way, and soon Lee found himself one on one with their keeper who pulled off a terrific save to deny Stirling the opening goal. The heat was now starting to have an effect on the game and both coaches were making substitutions to try and keep their players as fresh as possible but no matter who was on the story was the same with lots of Stirling possession and some fine defending from Subiaco. Shots were now peppering the Subiaco goal, and even Dylan stepped up with an effort in an attempt to break the deadlock. At full time though the score stood at 0-0, and although the vast majority of the play was in the Subiaco half, Stirling just could not find that elusive final touch to finish the game in the way their hard work and patient passing deserved.

UNDER 14'S - ARMADALE VS STIRLING LIONS (by Mal Mackie)
After a good performance against the NTC girls the week before, Stirling travelled down to Armadale with high expectations. Under clear blue autumn skies, Stirling started the game well and applied great pressure to the Armadale defence. As early as the fourth minute an attempt by Andon Andovski went just wide of the post. A minute later, after a throw in from the Stirling right flank, the ball fell to Fabio Castro who from ten metres out slotted the ball into the back of the net for the first goal to Stirling. The confidence of the Stirling players grew from this point with some great passing movements and good chances created. So dominant was Stirling in the first period of the half that Armadale's first attack didn't come until the 12th minute. This however was only just a warning of things to come. Two minutes later a good pass down the middle caught the Stirling defence out of position and the ball was put away by the Armadale centre forward for the equaliser. Both teams created numerous chances after this with Melad Sakhie coming closest for Stirling with a shot just wide of the post and Will Hofman making a couple of good saves to keep the scores level.
In the 21st minute Jack Williams came on for Kaan Ozkarra and almost gave Stirling the lead. A great cross from the left by Jason Stepanovski found Jack Williams all by himself at the far post whose fist time shot went just wide. It was all Stirling from here and in the 25th minute Jack Rankin won a hard challenge in midfield, saw the Armadale goalkeeper off his line and unleashed a fierce shot from thirty metres into the back of the net for a well deserved 2-1 lead for Stirling. Minutes later Stirling's lead was gone. A cross from a corner came to an unmarked Armadale player at the back post who made no mistake from a few metres out to make the score 2-2. It seemed luck was not running Stirling's way today as a fabulous long range shot on the stroke of half time by Mellad Sakhie hit the crossbar and came back into play.
After a fast paced first half that produced four good goals, both teams come off at half time for a well earned rest. The pace of the game continued in the second half with good chances falling to both teams. It was Armadale however who got on the scoresheet in the 40th minute with a good shot over Stirling keeper Will Hofman and into the back of the net. Despite protests by Stirling players and officials that play should have been brought back earlier for a foul on Jason Stepanovski by an Armadale player, the goal stands and it is Armadale who are 3-2 up.
The Armadale goal jolts Stirling into immediate action and numerous clear cut chances are created but poor finishing by Stirling proves costly in the end with the final score of 3-2 to Armadale. Based on general play and the number of chances created this was a game that Stirling should have won. However a lack of concentration after going in front a couple of times and poor finishing led to the first defeat for the season. The two week break for Easter/School Holidays gives Stirling the opportunity to work on its skills before its next game at home on the 22nd April against newly promoted Subiaco.

UNDER 14'S - STIRLING LIONS VS NTC (by Mal Mackie)
From the first kick off the NTC girl's squad applied enormous pressure. They played a possession game that had the Stirling Lions chasing them all over the pitch. Within the first few minutes, NTC pounced on a back pass clearance from the Stirling goalkeeper and scored their first goal. A few minutes later NTC had another hard shot at goals and despite a strong parry from Stirling goalkeeper Will Hofman, they were first to the ball and the resulting shot scored their second goal. NTC maintained the same pressure for the first twenty minutes of the game, consequently the game was being played mostly in the NTC forward half. Their third goal came from a long range shot to the top corner of the net. But from this point Stirling slowly worked their way back into the game. Defenders Dylan Filocamo and Jack Rankin began applying some pressure of their own to the NTC forwards and some strong work by Captain Lee James and Mellad Sakhie in midfield, saw some shots on goal from the Stirling Lions forwards Andon Andovski and James Mackie. A few minutes before half time, Andon made the most of a goal keeping fumble and scored Stirlings first goal.
The second half belonged to the Stirling Lions. Every player seemed to lift their work rate. Jack Williams and Hayden Yates worked tirelessly along the wings to bring the ball into an attacking position. Carla Bennett and Jason Stepanovski held the NTC forwards brilliantly and Will Hofman had some hard clashes in the 18 yard box. 10 minutes into the second half, a powerful 30 metre drive from Lee James found the back of the net for Stirlings second goal. A long ball to an a lone NTC forward scored their fourth goal and despite the linesman's raised flag and it being clearly offside, the goal was allowed. This seemed to lift the Stirling Lions up another notch. Tim Barber, Fabio Castro and Kaan Ozkara came on giving Stirling fresh legs. At the 20-minute mark of the second half, Tim cleverly found the ball after a goalkeeping error and scored Stirling's third goal. A few minutes before the final whistle, goalkeeper Will Hofman picked up a loose ball in the 18 yard box and quickly kicked it long to find Lee James who ran it forward and scored a great goal to level the score at 4-4. Overall it was an entertaining game and a courageous fight back by the Stirling Lions. Every player did their part and showed great fighting spirit to fight back from 3-0 down mid way through the first half. These are encouraging signs for the first game of the season.

REAL FOOTBALL SCHOOL (by Mark Lee, Youth Development Officer with Football West)
The inaugural Real Football School saw over 35 players converge on Wesley College for the intensive training course which saw participants work with some of the states leading youth coaches including Darren Young and Sean D'Arcy.
The Camp was divided into two, two-day courses, commencing on Saturday 13th January for players under the age of 10, and a camp for players under 12 on the Monday. This camp had been in mindset for some time and it was tremendous to work with such talented young players who I am certain will make up our State, National Training Centre (NTC) and national squads in the near future.
Our aim was to provide players, who were selected from Football West’s Futsal and FFV Programs, as well as Milo Clinics, with an insight into the day to day life of a professional footballer and the tools required to 'be the best they can be'.
The whole ethos behind the School was to allow players to make their own decisions as an individual and as part of a team. The low player to coach ratio allowed coaches to assess and guide players at every opportunity, with training focusing on individual technical work and team play situations.
Following each training session, a cool-down session was held in the schools swimming pool. Participants were educated on the importance of this and the need and benefits of relaxation and recovery. Players were also briefed on the importance of diet and hydration with various classroom sessions held throughout the Camps duration.
Players were put into squads and presented with a Football West diary; Kelme bag and training kit early on in the Camps schedule to allow each team to prepare for the final day match 'show-down'. Preparation included a team meeting where players were asked to prepare strategies and discuss various formations, tactics and set plays. Following on from this, each team held a training session to put their respective plans into practice.
The first day concluded with dinner and a 'player profile' presentation where squads discussed attributes and characteristics needed to succeed as a professional footballer and the skills needed to be a world-class player. Footage was also shown of various Champions League goals, with set-plays, skills and team work analysed.
At the Under-12s camp players were fortunate enough to attend a presentation by NTC Assistant Coach, Kenny Lowe, a former professional player who discussed player roles and responsibilities at English Premier League club, Middlesborough. As the NTC squads were present at Wesley College for the 10s Camp, it was invaluable for them to interact with arguably some of our states best players and coaches and watch and learn from our future stars!
Part of the camp involved venturing to the South Perth foreshore to play street football. WA certainly has a bright future in our game if the skill shown by participants is anything to go by! When players are allowed to play in a non competitive environment they produce moments of individual brilliance and I am proud to say we were awestruck on numerous occasions.
On the final day of each respective camp, players spoke one on one which their coach before heading into their teams final training session. Each session concluded with a team talk involving imagery and covered aspects of the game to equip players with the confidence, knowledge and skills needed not only to perform on the pitch, but also to improve both mentally and physically.
Players showed no signs of nerves during the match and it was great to see parents cheering on from the sidelines. It was also fantastic to witness teams attempt their set-plays, many of which resulted in some fantastic and truly memorable goals.
After the match, players and parents headed to Members Equity Stadium to do a match analysis on the Perth Glory versus Newcastle Jets game. Tickets were kindly provided by Perth Glory and gave players and parents the opportunity to analyse our states premier team. Some players were also fortunate enough to walk out with members from the Glory and Jets team – one day they may be doing the real thing!
Football West would like to thank players, parents and coaches, as well as our partners at Wesley College, Kelme and Perth Glory for their assistance in the Camps preparation and in ensuring the Camps success. All participants should be commended on their dedication, hard-work and attitude throughout the Camps duration and should consider themselves assets to our sport in WA!
Players involved in the Under-10s camp included Jack Boardman, Tristan Colli, Ryan Dowler, Geremy Fatourous, Jacob Florez, BJ Grant, Lee Halliday, Alex Ishida, Josh McCormick, Jnanadev Purcell, Mitchell Willis, Keenan Wozny and Paul Zimarino.
Players involved in the Under-12s camp included Lachlan Bechtold, Thomas Benjamin, Harrison Bissett, William Bissett, Christian De Domenico, Anton De Francesch, Nicholas Delborello, Kye Douglas, Frank Furfaro, Carmello Giuffre, Nathan Grostate, Harry Hosking, Tom King, Joseph Knowles, Ogi Lalovic, Nicholas Marland, Matthew Milkenovic, Jordan Mirco, Milos Pavic, Jake Price and Marco Santalucia.
