FORRESTFIELD EYE KANGA CUP

The black and gold of Forrestfield United will fly the flag for Western Australia this years edition of the Kanga Cup. The tournament, held annually in Canberra and now in its eighteenth year, is the largest youth tournament in the southern hemisphere and the fifth largest of its kind in the world. "This represents an opportunity for us to represent not only Forrestfield United and the local community, but also a team from Western Australia," said Elvis Bird, coach of Forrestfield's under-16 team. "Over the past two years there have been no teams from WA participate in the event, so to be confirmed as the only WA team at the tournament is exciting for the players involved."

Forrestfield are currently seeking sponsorship for their trip to Canberra in July. "We'd like to send a squad of fifteen players to Canberra and to make that happen we've been hard at work fundraising," explained Elvis. "At present we have raised $15000 from donations and fundraising such as chocolate sales - our aim is to raise another $4000 to cover flights, nomination and accommodation fees. We have a number of businesses from across the metropolitan area confirmed as sponsors but are after a few more." Anyone interested in assisting the Forrestfield youngsters achieve their goal of playing in Canberra is invited to contact Elvis Bird (0431 361 345), Carolyn Taylor (0417 097 229), Michelle Catchpole (0410 336 464) or club secretary Sue Treacey (9453 6211).

GLORY YOUTH SQUAD TAKES SHAPE

Perth Glory's National Youth League team is taking shape following three weeks of trials at Beale Park. The coaching team, headed by former Glory captain Gareth Naven, has selected an initial squad of 25 players in the build up to the final squad announcement. "With almost 200 talented youngsters from WA taking part in the open trial process the job of getting down to a final squad of 25 was extremely difficult" said Naven. "All the participants showed a very high level of commitment, skill and fitness to battle through, most of whom will have played local club games the previous day. It shows the desire and hunger of the WA community to be part of this great club."

After testing the players skills and abilities in various game scenarios, the coaches will now monitor the selected squad as they train together over the coming months before settling on a final representative team. "This is just the beginning of a long journey for some of the players. The final squad will contain only ten of these players so they all need to keep working hard and keep proving themselves, but for those who do, the rewards will be there" commented Naven. "I am happy with the group of players we now have to work with and am confident that we can put together a competitive and talented squad to represent the club and WA football in the upcoming National Youth League." 5.5.2008

NEW YOUTH LEAGUE GIVES YOUNGSTERS A FIGHTING CHANCE

Perth Glory's youth team coach Gareth Naven wants to see a greater number of West Australians playing for the A-League club - but not just for the sake of it. Naven, who captained the club for six seasons from its inception in 1996, is set to go about the job of moulding teenage prospects into first team regulars with the same vigour and enthusiasm he showed as a combative on-field leader during his playing days.

The aim of the National Youth League, set to kick-off in August, is to provide more opportunities for local players to be groomed into A-League material. Naven is quick to point out that ability is the first criteria for inclusion. "If local players are good enough, then give them a go," said Naven, who is also the State under-14 coach. "But if you aren't, you can't. Hopefully by bridging this gap with the youth league, we can provide some quality, intense training and given them an opportunity. All the player in the Football West and the national training centre (program) have got a stepping stone to the A-League now."

Mitchell has already indicated his desire to increase the number of local players, while the club will be forced to rely on Premier League players to provide the majority of their youth squad. "I think the A-League clubs have a responsibility to develop youth. It's their duty," said Naven, who is confident Football West are also on the right track with youth development. "Kids have now got to understand that at a certain age you've got to take football seriously. If they don't, they'll fall behind and never catch up."

Naven points to France as an example of how seriously players need to approach the game. "Kids over there at 13 are training a minimum of three times a week and playing a game. At 14 it's four and one (game), and at 15 it's five and one. That's taking it seriously," he said. "The NTC kids are taking it very seriously. The 14's we've got have two sessions with their club and two with me, so that's four and one. Obviously there's education, homework and their bodies and minds to take into consideration. But they are making a choice to be serious about football, which is great."

Naven will switch his attention to players aged 16 to 21 when trials for Glory's youth team kick-off at Beale Park, Spearwood, next weekend. The club is holding open trials in an effort to ensure all potential local youngsters are considered for inclusion. If you think you have what it takes, or are a coach and would like to recommend a player visit the Perth Glory website and complete the expression of interest form by 12.00pm Friday 9th May.

STATE YOUTH TEAM TAKES SECOND

The stars of the future have done themselves proud by reaching the final of the 2008 Institute Challenge played in Brisbane last week. The Institute Challenge provides the nations elite young players an opportunity to showcase their wares in front of national selectors, and test themselves against the best players from around the country.

WA began the week-long event with a commanding 1-0 victory against the South Australian Sports Institute with Eli Babalj getting the games only goal. FUTURE MATILDAS CLAIM THIRD PLACE IN NEW ZEALAND

Marianna Tabain has secured Australia third place at the ‘Future Stars’ tournament in Auckland. A penalty converted by Perth-based Tabain was all that separated the national Under-17 team from their New Zealand counterparts in a tightly contested final match of the event on Saturday. The win ensured the next generation of Matildas ended the four-nation tournament on a high after going down to the United States of America and Germany in earlier games. West Australian trio Samantha Kerr, Ella Mastrantino and Tabain took part in all three of Australia’s games.

Australia was no match for a powerful United States outfit who triumphed 6-0 in their opening game last Tuesday. Captain Casey Dumont performed admirably between the posts for Australia in keeping the scoreline down against a far more experienced opponent. Samantha Mewis bagged a hat-trick for the United States whose other goals came via Victoria Di Martino, Kristen Mewis and Courtney Verloo. Germany dumped New Zealand 4-0 in the days other action.

The national Under-17 went down 5-1 to Germany in the second round of fixtures. Despite the scoreline, the young Australian side gave a good account of themselves against one of the powerhouse nations of women’s football. Germany opened up a three-goal buffer courtesy of Svenja Huth, Turid Knaak and Kristine Zumbült before being pegged back to 3-1 with Emily van Egmond heading in a Tabain cross on the stroke of halftime. Annika Doppler and Alexandra Popp scored on the counterattack to make the game safe for the Germans. The United States trounced New Zealand 5-0 in the late game.

A final day win over New Zealand lifted Australia above the host nation and into third place on the final standings. Encouraged by their performance against Germany, Australia started brightly with good chances coming the way of Tameka Butt and Teigan Allen. The games only goal arrived on 44 minutes when Tabain converted from the spot following a foul on Butt. A spirited second half produced openings for both teams with Australia’s best falling to Kerr who shaved the upright from close range. The United States won the tournament by defeating Germany 1-0.

The Australian Under-17 squad for the ‘Future Stars’ tournament featured Teigan Allen, Tara Andrews, Nicola Bolger, Alesha Clifford, Rachel Cooper, Jenna Kingsley, Linda O’Neill, Kyah Simon, Emily van Egmond, Rachel Wynne (New South Wales), Tameka Butt, Casey Dumont, Sophie Hogben, Vedrana Popovic (Queensland), Ruth Wallace (South Australia) Samantha Kerr, Ella Mastrantonio and Marianna Tabain (Western Australia).

JUNIORS PLAY VITAL ROLE ON PHOENIX' FUTURE

South West Phoenix are happy with how things are progressing for their entry into next years metropolitan juniors competitions. Football West granted the Bunbury-based club approval to field teams in the under-13, 14 and 15 age groups last month and trials for the three sides have been a roaring success. "Future Phoenix trials started a fortnight ago with over forty players strutting their stuff for the coaches," said players' representative Steve Suttie. "The turn out was better that expected considering many players were unable to attend due to school commitments, and in recent weeks the competition for places has certainly intensified."

Suttie views the development of Phoenix' three junior sides as vital to the on-going viability and success of the club as a semi-professional entity. "Junior players from the South West have always competed well with their metropolitan counterparts up to around under-12 level, but then the gap widens due to the stronger competition the metro area," he said. Phoenix players will now have play in those same leagues giving them a chance to improve their skills and progress from the junior sides through to our youth team and eventually the senior squad."

"The girls really did well today, although we should have scored a few more," said East Fremantle coach Robert Dekleine. "They have worked really hard this season and deserve everything they are getting.”

BILSON BOUND FOR LONDON

Lillie Bilson headed to London on the weekend in pursuit of fulfilling the dream of a lifetime. A four-year stay with the Arsenal Ladies Academy awaits the 16-year old who is determined to extend her time with the English giants by gaining a professional contract. The opportunity to join Arsenal came about last year when Bilson was invited to be part of the squad at the 'Football Festival' youth event in Denmark.

Bilson, who took up the game just four years ago, impressed the Gunners coaching staff during trials and is looking forward to the challenge. "I can't wait to get there and get straight into training; it should be a great experience for me," she said. "I went over earlier in the year and played in a few games and they were impressed with me and I'm delighted to get a chance to play in one of the best leagues in the world."

While Bilson will start out playing youth team football her sights are already set on breaking into senior ranks. "The standard is very high in England but I'm confident I'll be able to push for a first team spot if I work hard and show them what I'm capable of," she said. "One thing I'll have to get used to is the weather, the season will be played through their winter and it will be very cold, but that's something I'll have overcome."

Prior to heading overseas Bilson turned out for the boys under-15 team at Stirling Lions which she feels has helped her prepare for what lies ahead. "It's great for me to participate with the lads here at the Lions," Bilson commented. "With the boys game being a lot more physical, it will help me when I get over to England. The boys have been great since I joined and I'd like to thank them and coach Alex Olejnik for all their help this season."

UNDER 14'S - STIRLING LIONS VS FREMANTLE (by the Williams Family)

For the first five minutes of this game the home team applied good pressure but unfortunately shots from Andon Andovski and Eddie Pop failed to find the goal, although that of the latter was from a difficult angle. This certainly fired up the opposition into a strong counter attack where the Stirling defense was stretched to their limits with not only a ball striking the right goal post but another, soon after, hitting the crossbar. But our defense held their ground and the scene was set for what was to become an excellent game.

Half way into the first half, a long ball from Eddie Pop from the left to the right wing, where brother Richard plays, gave Stirling the upper hand as further passing brought the ball into the box where Lee James's skill put the ball into the net from just outside the left post. A 1-0 lead was not enough for the Lions to become complacent as very soon after, following another strong attack from the Fremantle team, a goal was disallowed because one of their eager forwards had been offside when he received the ball within eight metres of the goal mouth.

When James Corrigan substituted on for Andon towards the end of the first half, he found himself immediately in the thick of the action where he, and other forwards, made several more attempts to improve the score without success. As before, the Fremantle counter attack was swift and only consistent defending from the Lions within their box, and a further offside decision also within the box, helped keep the score 'as is' for the second half.

Both sides knew this could be anybody's game when the second half commenced and each team was as determined as the other to achieve success. Mellad Sakhie held the central midfield well and put some good through balls to both strikers and wingers. Jason Stepanovski had an early chance on goal but it was a long, angled shot and Ashley Zacharia needed a few milliseconds longer to perfect his own shot; enthusiasm was not lacking amongst anyone 'up front' with all players willing to have a go. Even Carla Bennett was up there amongst the action, since Capt Jack Williams played the whole game as sweeper, and her pass to Lee created another opportunity.

Further Fremantle retaliation put Dylan Filocamo, Jack W and Jack Rankin under constant pressure as the Stirling defense was frequently tested. It would be interesting to see Dylan and the tallest Fremantle striker in a 100 metre sprint as it was never quite clear whether the latter was going to outpace our unbeatable State player. Just one dangerous ball looked like beating the Lions defense only to be anticipated by goalkeeper Will Hofman racing out of his box to meet it with his right boot.

That foresight probably prevented the late equaliser from coming as it has done in previous Stirling matches. A free kick taken by James Mackie was unfortunately blocked by 'the wall' but tremendous midfield and up front passing skills between Eddie, Carla, Lee, James M and Ashley prevented Fremantle from regaining the play in the final few minutes so the score remained 1-0.

UNDER 14'S - FW NTC GIRLS VS STIRLING LIONS (by the Zacharia Family)

The revitalized Stirling Lions continued their 2nd round winning ways with a hard fought 4-1 win against Alistair Edwards NTC Girls who despite being without key Matildas player Collette McCallum were well led by the terrier like Lisa de Vanna who continually weaved her magic trying to find a way past Stirlings 'twin towers' led by State Player Dylan Filocamo & Jack Rankin who stood firm despite some physical encounters.

Jack Williams mopped up well when ever the 'twin towers' were breached countering with slick passing to the flanks where the Pop twins worked tirelessly from box to box creating opportunities with great through balls to the forwards. A smart Andon Andovski diagonal run benefited Lee James who was left free to run on to the through ball before firing his volley into the back of the net in the 9th minute to give Stirling a well deserved 1-0 lead.

A lack of concentration saw Stirling substitutes play an early part as the NTC were nearly gifted an easy goal as the defence hesitated but Will (the cat) Hofman saved the day.

Despite being dwarfed by the mature aged players the lion hearted cubs competed in all quarters and were rewarded in the 25th minute when a set piece ended with the determined Ashley Zacharia pressuring the NTC defence resulting in a soft own goal to make it 2-0.

Stirling continued with their possession game stringing together good passages of play as Carla Bennett and Mellad Sakhie worked tirelessly in the centre of the 5 man midfield to hold the NTC Girls, whose vision & passing was creating opportunities especially #16 who continually switched play from wing to wing creating opportunities but the forwards failed to capitalise. In the 29th minute the NTC were punished again when some slick play saw James Mackie stepovers bamboozled the defence before he played through Richard Pop to powered goal bound holding off a number of determined tackles initially from the NTC centre half and subsequently the left back before unleashing an angled shot that flew into the bottom corner of the goal past the out of position keeper to give the lions a well deserved 3-0 lead at half time.

James Lee ended with a brace effectively bringing the game to an end in the 55th minute although the NTC managed a late consolation goal in the 58th minute after a high cross was punched clear by the keeper who was judged to have connected with the player who slotted home the resulting penalty despite a valiant attempt by the keeper as Stirling cruised home for a hard fought 4-1 win.

UNDER 14'S - STIRLING LIONS VS ARMADALE (by the Filocamo Family)

This Round 19 Premier U14s clash between Stirling Lions and Armadale saw the Lions at home with no less then 4 players absent with injury or sickness against what is always a physical game against the big determined Armadale lads so a reshuffled lions side came out determined to continue their recent good form led by inspirational defender and captain Dylan Filocamo who together with fellow central 'twin towers' centrehalf Jack Rankin dominated the dangerous Armadale forwards.

Fellow defender Alex Sallery continued with his recent good form with another solid game at right back also providing forward runs creating opportunities for the forwards as did Jason Stepanovski at left back. It was one of these through balls that found Andon Andovski who finished clinically to give Stirling a 1-0 lead in the 5th minute.

Armadale nearly broke through in the 10th minute but the ever alert Will (The Cat) Hofman, who has a reasonable quite day apart from a couple of good saves, pounced on the dangerous through ball at the same time as the forward appearing to pull the forwards shirt to stop him going through but the forward pulled free so the ref played advantage as the forward ran onto the ball before shooting wide into the side netting with the goal at his mercy. The wide midfielders Richard and Eddie Pop were their usual box to box midfielders providing the run out wide creating havoc for the tiring Armadale side who struggled to keep up with them. The classy Carla Bennett played the holding midfield role who together with Jack Williams read the play well with classic passing leaving their opponents chasing shadows all day. Another great series of passing preceded a through ball in the 15th minute which found Lee James whose half volley on the run bulleted into the back of the net giving the keeper no chance. Ashley Zacharia joined the action showcasing his maradona skills which saw the shadow chasing opponents tempers start to flare which resulted in a very physical game as a result of some unsavory tackles by the frustrated Armadale boys as Ashley scored the 3rd goal in clinical style. Stirling were committed and despite scoring what appeared to be two more good goals both of which were disallowed, the first from Rhys Wiggins who ghosted in at the back post outpacing the defender to the ball before unleashing an unstoppable shot and the 2nd disallowed goal was from a Jack Rankin 20 yard rocket that cannoned in off the crossbar appearing to cross the line before spinning back out. Andon finished with a brace with his second in the 40th minute as the busy forward got his reward for another hardworking effort. Final score a 4-1 win for Stirling Lions.

UNDER 14'S - SUBIACO CITY VS STIRLING LIONS (by the Wiggins Family)

Stirling were led out by Captain Rhys Wiggins who started well having a few chances early with some shots and crosses just missing over the bar or going wide before Subiaco scored against the run of play after their keeper kicked a long ball which was run onto and well finished by the forward who outpaced his marker to score giving Subiaco an early 1-0 lead.

Stirling replied 4 minutes later as a series of passes saw the ball knocked out wide to Eddie whose cross the keeper seemed to have firmly in his hands but it spilled free for Lee to tap in the equalizer at half time.

The second half was underway with the stronger Lions free flowing play causing the spirited Subiaco team problems in all areas but they managed to hold on as Mellad going hard for the challenges gave away some free kicks but Subiaco failed to convert as Will (The Cat) Hofman saved well. In the 50th minute Stirling thought they had the winner when another run by Richard finished with him crossing the ball from the right corner which was headed just outside the box for Andon to pounce on only to see his powerful shot cannon back off the cross bar. In the last few minutes Subiaco got another free kick just outside the box which was well finished to give them a battling win much to the delight of the home crowd as the final whistle sounded meaning Stirling lost 2-1.

FOREST CRESCENT CROWNED GLORY CUP CHAMPIONS

The School Sport WA Primary Football Championships came to an exciting conclusion with Forest Crescent crowned Glory Cup Champions after beating Halls Head 2-1 at Hilton Reserve in Fremantle. It was the first time that two government schools met in the Grand Final, and was pleasing to see the standard of the game at primary school level is improving greatly year-by-year.

Forest Crescent took the ascendancy early in their semi-final against St Jerome's and scored a couple of early goals in the first half, which placed a great deal of pressure on the opposition to come back. Two more goals sealed the win for Forest Crescent in their first ever finals game. St Jerome's scored a late consolation to make in 4-1 but Forest Crescent had a Grand Final berth sealed.

The second semi-final was a much tighter affair with Halls Head and Connolly playing out a classic end-to-end encounter. And with niether team able to break through in regulation time the match was decided by a penalty shoot-out. The turning point came when Connolly missed successive spot kicks and Halls Head capitalised by converting their final effort to progress to the final.

The scene was set for a new State champion for 2007 and what a start it was for Halls Head who took the lead early in the first half. Forest Crescent were stung into action and eventually their relentless pressure produced an equaliser to send the sides into the break at 1-1. Both teams went for the win after the break with Forest Crescent prevailing to lift the trophy 2-1.

In the end it was another highly successful Championships with over 700 children taking part during the two week event, demonstrating excellent sportsmanship and skills. It was pleasing to see the large number of parents and supporters who attended even though the inclement weather did make it less than desirable.

UNDER 14'S - STIRLING LIONS VS SWAN IC (by the Sallery Family)

A glorious winter morning saw Captain Alex Sallery lead the mighty Stirling lions out on to Macedonia Park as the home team got the game off to a good start with early shots by Jason and Lee which resulted in good saves by the Swan I.C goalkeeper. Richard was brought down about 25yards form goal, which Alex had a crack at goal but the keeper saved comfortably. On 5 minutes a great through ball from Richard found Lee whose powerful run and strike found the back of the net. 1-0 Stirling. Swan broke free down the left wing but Alex was there to stop. A great cross from Eddie Pop on 12 minutes found Lee's boot as he guided it into the bottom corner. 2-0 Stirling. Then a great through ball from Mellad found Ashley whose silky maradona skills sees him slip his marker to go 1 on 1 with the keeper before calmly scoring in the bottom corner. 23mins 3-0 Stirling. An undisciplined free-kick given away by Jack 35 yards away from goal gave the Swan player the chance to hit it sweetly through Will's hands into the back of the net. 27 minutes 3-1.

Swans kick off the second half at 10:50 and immediately Stirling win the ball back through Mellad who feeds it to Richard who takes on and beats 3 players before a beckham style cross finds Andon's powerful run whose bullet header flys into the back of the net giving the keeper no chance. 4-1 Stirling. Rhys Wiggins comes on for his premier league debut and kicks it off with a great run & turn sending the defender the wrong way 20 yards out on a tight angle before producing a glorious shot which rockets into the top corner of the goal. 5-1 Stirling in the 37th minute. Great solid play at the back by the defence well led by Dillon and Jack with great distribution down the wings by Jason & Alex linking well with the Pop twins again finds James Mackie in the 50th minute who controls well before slipping a through ball which puts Lee through for his Hat Trick as he comfortably scores. 6-1 Stirling. A solid debut by Alex sees him forced off by an ankle injury as Jason comes and almost immediately pounces on a lose ball on the edge of the box to unleash a fierce shot which flys into the back of the net. 7-1 Stirling. Another break from defence saw Dillon power forward before slipping the ball to James Mackie who looked up to shoot first time but was blocked by the defender but smartly checked back then out to create space before unleashing a pile driver that flew into the net giving the keeper no chance. 8-1 Stirling in the 58th minute. Lee James was subbed in the 57 minute coming off to a roaring crowd after his all round contribution which included a hatrick. C.J produced a great cross from the right, which looked like the goalie had comfortably, but it popped out and Ashley was there to pick up the crumbs. 9-1 Stirling 59th minute. Stirling finished off the demoralized Swain IC team with another Rhys Wiggins goal in the final minute for his brace to secure a 10-1 result for Stirling who worked hard to try and forget about the midweek loss to ECU in the QTR final effectively bringing an end to their great cup run.

UNDER 14'S - SORRENTO VS STIRLING LIONS (by the Zacharia Family)

A solid all round team effort saw Stirling beat top of the table Sorrento 2-0 following a virtuoso performance from midfield general Mellad Sakhie who provided the catalyst for Stirlings win as the game further highlighted a strong showing from Lee James, who together with fellow State Team Player Dylan Filocamo, is finally starting to show his potential, as he scored both goals, the first a sweetly struck volley from the edge of the box, and his second from an indirect free kick which was passed to him by Jason which he blasted into the goal.

It took only 10 minutes for the Lions to get on the score sheet after a cross into the goalmouth by Richard was headed out by the defence to Lee whose volley found the back of the net.

Stirling applied further pressure with Capt Ashley Zacharia combining well with Andon Andovski both menacing the Sorrento defence who worked hard to repel the Lions attacking thrusts.

Sorrento countered but a great save by Will (the cat) Hofman kept the home team scoreless.

Stirling bounced back with Jason going on a solo run in the 24th minute with his shot on the run going narrowly wide and soon after Richards in swinging corner only needing a touch in the crowded goalmouth, but the ball avoided all the lunges from the Lions attackers. At the other end of the park it was Sorrento who went close with a dangerous shot just missing by inches in the 37th minute.

Striker Ashley Zacharia was replaced in the 40th minute by CJ and the speedy dynamic forward had an instant impact in the 44th minute when he went on a blistering solo run leaving two Sorrento defenders in his wake and then cutting the ball back to Mellad Sakhie whose shot from the edge of the box was skied over the bar when the goal was at his mercy.

The Lions came out of the break hungry for goals and it wasn't long before the lead was taken courtesy of a brilliant Jack Williams through ball for Eddie Pop to run onto and drill goal bound past the advancing keeper who saved well.

Carla Bennett sent Richard through, out wide with his inch perfect cross finding Andon who cleverly side footed the goal bound 65th minute which was again well saved. As the half wore on the Sorrento side were reduced to kicking the ball long in the hope that their forwards could provide some forward spark, but without effect as the Lions defence were whose back four of Jack Rankin, Dylan Filocamo, Jack Williams & Jason Stepanovski were all in a mean mood giving nothing away.

The icing on the cake for Stirling came from a well worked set piece with Jason's long throw in was neatly flicked into the goalmouth for Lions forwards but the Sorrento defender was quicker to react before dubious back pass decision resulted in the indirect free kick which was duly converted to finish off the match in the 85th minute.

UNDER 14'S - STIRLING LIONS VS COCKBURN CITY (by the Hofman Family)

Stirling took control of the midfield early as Mellad Sakhie dominated in the center on his own as Lee James had a quite first half apart from unleashing a couple of missile type shots wide of the target. The Pop twins were at their consistent best creating havoc for their opponents as they beat them one on one time & time again as we saw Richard brought down in the 7th Minute. The Lions took an early lead courtesy of the resulting well taken Jason Stepanovski free kick which was skillfully controlled on the chest of CJ whose first touch smartly went goal bound before he unleashed a fierce shot that gave the Cockburn State goalkeeper no chance.

Both teams were stringing great passages of play together with build ups from the back through midfield to the respective forwards whose tussles with the defence initially saw Cockburn equalize in the 25th minute after some sloppy passing by Jack Rankin was pounced upon.

Goal keeper Hofman was as solid as usual pulling off a number of saves before a lapse in concentration saw a speculative long range shot slip through for a soft goal as Cockburn took a surprised 2-1 lead in the 40th minute against the run of play. The Lions showed great character as they further intensified their game with free flowing passing. Jack Williams now on at right back replacing the tiring Carla Bennett sent through a great raining drill through ball to the hard running Richard Pop who expertly beat his full back before sending in a pin point Beckham type cross for the hard running Andon Andovski outpace his tall marker to clinically tap in at the near post to make it 2-2 as the crowd erupted in appreciation of what was a well rehearsed 'poetry in motion' training drill.

The determined Lions were searching for the elusive winner going close on a number of occasions now playing with only three at the back but were caught out with a classic counter attack as Jack Williams was caught on the wrong side of his forward who raced through to score in the 44th minute to give Cockburn a 3-2 lead.

Skillful playmaker James Mackie was creative just behind the front two showcasing his skills as he created a number of opportunities for others before going close himself with a classic one on one with the outstanding keeper who saved the day for Cockburn with his shoulder.

Another Lions 'poetry in motion' passage of play resulted in the rusty Ashley Zacharia missing the target from inside the 6 yard box as the final whistle sounded making the end result an exciting nail biting 3-2 win for Cockburn but the real winner on the day was football in general as both teams played the beautiful game the beautiful way.

PERTH JUNIORS CONQUER THE WORLD

The junior players of Perth S.C. can proudly hold their heads high following a successful tour of Italy and Spain on which they captured a swag of silverware. Perth's Under-14 squad went undefeated in fourteen outings, scoring 45 times and conceding just three, to lift both the Italy Cup and Copa-Catalunya. The Under-15's captured the Italy Cup and were awarded the Fair Play award at the Copa-Catalunya with eleven wins and a draw from their thirteen games on foreign shores.

The level of success achieved by both teams surprised Gary Marocchi, chairman of the tour committee. "We didn't think we had a chance of being victorious in any of the tournaments, so to come home with three trophies was beyond our expectations," he said. "The tour got off to a great start with some encouraging performances at the Italy Cup and that was backed up by a solid display at the Copa-Catalunya in Spain where the competition was a lot stronger."

Marocchi was particularly impressed by the players' unity and ability to quickly adapt to situations. "Both teams played as a cohesiveness unit and that aspect of their game got better with every match," he said. "The players had the flexibility to fill a number of roles and the changing the line-ups didn't disrupt their performances. Skill-wise, they matched up well against some tough opposition, but our greatest asset was a willingness to compete at all times with the Australian toughness shining through."

The first port of call was Rimini where the Under-14's cruised to victory in the Italy Cup. Goals from Vid Amidzic and Dylan Tombides opened their campaign with a 2-0 win over Richmond Hill (Canada). FB Denmark were dispatched 5-0 with Amidzic scoring twice and Jason Marsden, Joshua Wilkins and Joseph De Luca once each. Perth complete the initial phase by thrashing US Marquette (France) 7-0 against whom Tombides bagged a hat-trick, Alex Gismondi netted two and singles came from Milan Vulin and Amidzic.

Matthew Izzo got the only goal in a narrow defeat of AS Templeuve (France). Elhurst (USA) were humbled 5-0 through goals by Gismondi, Aaron Jeffery, Amidzic, Izzo and Tombides. This was followed by a 4-0 win oagainst US Pont Ste Maxence (France) where Amidzic, Ben Meredith, Tombides and Jeffery where the scorers. The final was a re-match with Richmond Hill which ended in a 5-0 route and goals from Amidzic (2), Wilkins, Jeffery and Vulin. "Their performance in the final was outstanding and a testament to the quality of football they played in Italy," commented Marocchi.

The Under-15's made a dream start to their tournament by thrashing Sasfeszek (Hungary) 8-1. Hat-tricks came the way of Liam Boland and Million Butshiire with Luke Bower grabbing the remainder. Two more goals by Bower enabled Perth to overturn a half-time deficit and claim victory by 2-1 against Elhurst (USA). The Blues finished top of Group A despite being held 1-1 by Enskede IK (Sweden) with Bower again on the scoresheet.

Bower continued his fine touch by netting the only goal in the 1-0 play-off defeat of Enskede IK. International Academy (USA) were accounted for 1-0 courtesy of a Robert Rixer strike, and Liam Boland got both goals in the 2-0 defeat of Szolnoki (Hungary). The final pitted Perth with Enskede IK for the third time in as many days with the Blues claiming the title 2-0 through a couple of quality finishes by Butshiire and Rixer. "We had a tough draw and our players discipline probably gave us the edge in a series of tight games," said Marocchi.

The Copa-Catalunya kicked-off three days later in Lloret de Mar, a coastal town 75 kilometres outside Barcelona. The Under-14's swept past Ars IK (Denmark) 5-0 in their first game, Tombides (2), Gismondi, Wilkins and Amidzic the scorers. A 1-1 draw with Akarpis IF (Sweden) came courtesy of Amidzic's strike on day two, while Amidzic (2), Gismondi (2) and own goal earned a 5-0 victory against FC Fondi (Italy). Tombides were the scorer in the 1-1 draw with Asteras Varis (Greece) which completed the group stage. Izzo and Amidzic were amongst the goals in a tough quarter-final showdown with Riverstown (Ireland).

A place in the series decider was booked by Amidzic whose late strike earned a 1-0 victory against Ars IK. Polisportiva Kasmene, who are aligned to Serie A club Messina, provided the opposition in the final which Perth won in a penlaty shoot-out. The Blues dominated the game and went ahead with eight minutes remaining through Meredith, only for the Italians to equalise shortly after. James Marocchi, Izzo, Tombides and Amidzic each converted from the spot but the hero of the hour was goalkeeper Tim Doyle who saved two penlaties.

The Under-15's opened the Copa-Catalunya by beating AS Beauvais (France) 1-0 with Bower the scorer. Rixer and Butshiire earned a 2-0 win over AC Passirano (Italy), while the 2-0 defeat of FC Koronida (Greece) came about through goal by Butshiire and Thomas Black. Perth came out flying against Kavlinge GIF (Sweden) in the quarter-finals with early goals by Boland and Butshiire giving them the upper hand, however, the Swedes fought back in the second half to take out the game 3-2.

The minor place-play qualifying game ended in a comfortable 3-0 win against LSC 1890 (Netherlands) against whom Bower netted twice and Boland once. Perth's under-15's secured fifth on the final standings by accounting for Bele-Barkarby (Sweden) 4-1 through goals by Bower (2), Boland and Butshiire. "The boys were awarded the Fair Play trophy for their sportmanship and attitudes on the park but were extremely disappointed with their quarter final loss, especially as Beauvais, who we beat in the first game, went on to win the tournament," explained Marocchi.

While Perth are yet to decided whether they defend the titles won in 2008, Marocchi says the club are making plans to head abroad again next year. "Perth have received an informal invitation for our Under-15's to compete in an invite only tournament in Rome which will include Italian teams such as Lazio, AS Roma and Bari amongst others," he said. "We'll attempt to obtain written confirmation of our invitation and then formally approach Perth and Football West for permission to participate."
